BIOL 450  Histology:  The Study of Tissues

Spring, 2008

Instructor: Arthur V. Chadwick

Meeting time: 9:00 - 11:50 Tuesday and Thursday, Scales, Rm. 220

Histology is the science of tissues.  The tissues of the body can be subdivided in ways that make sense in terms of the structure and function of the body parts.  Histology considers both structure and function of these tissues, with particular attention to the anatomical recognition of tissues and the relationship between the physical structures and the physiological functions of those tissues.  Successful participants in this class will learn to identify the microscopic features of the tissues of the body and of the organs from which they are derived.

Class will consist of an introductory lecture on the tissue of interest.  This will be followed by examination of the tissues in the microscope.  The required textbook for the course is Junqueira's Histology. Hyperlinks for Lecture or Lab lead to pages with more information on the lecture or lab in question. Similarly, hyperlinks on Other Websites lead to photographs of histological slides on the subject in question.  Hyperlinks under Self Quiz lead to pages with practical self tests over the subjects of those labs.  Successful completion of these practical quizzes will validate the state of your preparation for the practical exams.
