In both faculty and student research, involving human subjects, whether
subject-risk is a possibility or not, collection of data may not
begin until WRITTEN APPROVAL has been given by the HSRB. The HSRB
has the authority to suspend or terminate research which does not meet
its policies.
Students who engage in human-subjects research sponsored by non- university
organizations and for which the students so involved will register to
receive Southwestern Adventist University credit are expected to have
the research cleared in advance by the HSRB.
All events of injury to subjects during a research project (either on
or off-campus) must be reported by the principal investigator to the University
physician immediately, and to the HSRB chairperson, both in writing,
as soon as possible, within 7 days of the injury.
The University physician has the authority in such cases to suspend
the research project temporarily, until determination can be made concerning
continuation. Consultation between the physician and the HSRB chairperson
(and other members, as necessary) will occur before a decision is made
on continuation, revision of protocol, or termination of research. Any
work with human subjects may resume only upon written authorization by
the HSRB chairperson. The decision will be made, and response issued,
within 14 days.
